My first step to being eco-friendly will be using a recycled plastic handbag made out of bags from target... when I win this contest. :) And I recycle by way of thrift store shopping.
ReplyDeleteJon would like an entry as well. He uses his Brita water bottle instead of plastic and we minimize the use of our electricity by keeping our cotton pickin' thermostat at 80 cotton pickin' degrees. Did I mention we live in South Texas? Pat on the back please. ;)
$2 to World Wildlife Fund, please. :)
I'm doing a number of things to be more eco-friendly! I separate out all of the paper, plastic, and glass from the trash so they can be recycled. I reuse plastic shopping bags as either bathroom trash bags or doggie-poo pick up bags.
ReplyDeleteI also love to buy furniture at thrift shops & refashion it to fit my style, whether that means recovering a chair, or just painting a little table, so I guess that's a form of recycling.
My boyfriend and I also share a car right now. When it's the other person's turn to use it, we either walk, take the bus, or ride a bike, so either way we are using less gas per person!
I could list a lot more, but I'm sure that's enough for now. I LOVE the bag by the way! what an inventive & cute way to reuse plastic!

I have been recycling as much as I possibly can, I live in the Boston area and was horrified when I lived in Boston proper and there was NO recycling at any of our buildings, and now I stockpile everything you could possibly recycle instead of throwing it out.
ReplyDeleteI use reusable lunch bags, bring my lunch in tupperware as much as I can, instead of plastic bags, use reusable bags for groceries (we have banned plastic grocery bags in our house), bring my own tea in a thermos instead of hitting starbucks, and use a glass at work for the water cooler instead of bottled water.
I'm happy to say that my folks instilled in me long ago the importance of recycling and diminishing waste, so I'm pretty seasoned in the whole drag-your-wine-bottles-to-the-recycle-center game. I always use a h2o bottle, make my own coffee (always fair trade, which is more human- than eco-friendly, but important nonetheless), walk to work, turn off lights and unplug electronics. Little things, but I like to think they help!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I took that quiz. With my lifestyle, apparently we would need 3.15 Earths. Way lower than the national average, but kinda shocking nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteCute bags! My mom also taught me the importance of re-using and recycling. I thought back then that she was just cheap and didn't want to buy new...now, I realize that my mom was way smarter than I gave her credit for :)
ReplyDeleteI've been using my moms teachings and actively seeking out new ways to be more green daily. Every little thing helps!
I have been using reusable bags when im out shopping, i suppose there is still alot more i could to be green.

Okay, so I took the quiz and my footprint was 206.53, and we'd need 5.32 Earths if everyone lived my lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteIn order to be more eco-friendly, I am going to try not to kill the tomato plants I've been growing in my garden! They're so tall now, I'm proud. :D
This is the link to the post where I've advertised your contest: http://afterglowecho.blogspot.com/2009/06/bright-as-yellow.html
I took the quiz and I am surprised that I did well in each footprint department except food!! I honestly don't care for organic food because I am too poor to afford to shop at Whole Foods. My husband and I are more concerned with getting more for our money than eating organic. I would like to but I would probably have to ease into it because it is less likely that I would one day want to buy organic everything. Maybe when we have real jobs...... Oh and if everyone lived m ylifestyle, we would need 4.22 earths. WHAT?!? I was way shocked because other than the food, I really do try to be more eco-friendly - like buying secondhand clothing, using resuable grocery bags, airdrying clothes, energyefficient bulbs, using public transportation, riding my bike..these are just a few things. Honestly most of these are to save money....but it helps the Earth too....doesn't it?!? ;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't do two comments. I'll just copy and paste:

I take the train to work everyday and I use an aluminum water bottle. I also walk everywhere where I don't take the train. I also use energy efficient light bulbs and take canvas totes to the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the WWF donation.
I also took the Ecological Footprint Quiz & my footprint total was 126.82, which was below the country average on all the charts, but with my lifestyle we'd still need 3.27 earths! Geez! I guess it'll just encourage me to do better & do more to conserve, recycle, & be nice to the earth!
ReplyDeleteposted your giveaway & a link on my twitter too! here's the link: http://twitter.com/kedaniels
ReplyDeleteHi,

Thanks!
it's on my twitter! http://twitter.com/urbanrhetoric
ReplyDeleteTo be more eco-friendly I have started to recycle my soda cans, use re-usable grocery bags, and thrift shop.
ReplyDeleteI have posted your giveaway on my blog: http://parsimonystyle.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteoh very cool! :)
ReplyDeletethe biggest thing I'm doing right now to be more eco-friendly is riding my bike to work (as much as possible) this summer :) My family also changed most of our light bulbs to the more sustainable ones this summer and we have been recycling a lot more.

Awesome giveaway... I am currently reading "Sleeping Naked is Green", in which a blogger decides to do a new eco-friendly thing every day for a year... So your giveaway is totally in the spirit of what I'm reading right now!
ReplyDeleteSo about some eco-friendly stuff I do: I compost fruits and vegetables, I use public transit, I recycle, I use reusable grocery bags, etc...
Thanks for doing this!
I am trying to remember to unplug my chargers each morning so they dont waste electricity all day. Also love my new aluminum water bottle, no more plastics.
ReplyDeleteWow, we'd need 2.03 earths to sustain my way of living. I'm totally eco-friendly until you count up my airfare! 16,000 miles a year! Ouch!

I have posted your giveaway on my blog: http://shoppinginsuffolk.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteps.I love your blog!!!
What I do to be more green: I don't use a dishwasher or clothing dryer, nor do I drive a car. I walk the mile+ to the grocery store and carry my purchases home in my backpack (fantastic way to get a workout). Recently I've started going to the local farmer's market for locally grown produce. All this is "easy" to do because I'm currently living in a city center, so I don't think it's fair to compare my situation to that of suburbanites.
ReplyDeleteI'm a vegetarian (mostly because I don't like meat) but the fact you can feed 10x the amount of people using the same amount of land to grow veggies (as opposed to meat) sure does help me stick with it. Thinking about it, I do use the oven for a least one meal a day, so maybe I should start trying to eat more raw foods (plus it's healthier). I fly a lot,so I really should look into carbon credits for airfare as well.
The BIG thing I've started (in the last 9 months or so) is ONLY buying secondhand. :)
My apologies for my super-long stream-of-consciousness post. This giveaway was a really enticing/interesting idea...it's easy to say "I'm green" but when you have to justify your way of life, it really makes you reexamine things.
oops!

I put this up on my blog along with what my roommates and I have been doing to help!

i now always use reusable bags and recycle religiously!
ReplyDeleteI've been better about carrying my water bottle everywhere with me so I don't have to buy a bottle. I've also become excellent at shopping with reusable bags. And I'm an avid flea marketer!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily! I'm new to your blog - and think that this giveaway is a fantastic idea! I try to help the environment through my food choices as much I can on a college student's budget. I like to buy local from the town farmer's market, which reduces the fossil fuels burned in transporting food cross-country. I cut out most meat (and red meat entirely) from my diet, which also cuts down on my petroleum footprint. Other than those, I reuse plastic bags and food containers and recycle household items.

I also took the quiz - and my footprint is 125 ga. If everyone lived my lifestyle, we would need 3.22 earths. The quiz is really eye-opening, and a great way to put your personal consumption in perspective!

ReplyDeleteMy score was 71.85 -- below the country average, which isn't surprising since I work in an environmental field and eco-consciousness is my life! Still, we'd need 1.85 earths if everyone lived my lifestyle. This quiz is very eye-opening, good find! Awesome bag, too.

I am using reusable shopping bags at the grocery store and at target. I am also using a water bottle that is made from recycled material!
ReplyDeleteI have a blog "Going Green on a College Budget"
ReplyDeleteIt gives great ways to do little things without spending a lot of money to help out the earth!
I made a post about your giveaway!

I only use reusable shopping bags for groceries. I make clothes and other sewing projects from used patterns, thrift store fabric and garments. My most recent project was recovering an armchair found at the curb!

I have been recycling, using reusable shopping bags, doing LOTS of thrift shopping and reusing water bottles i already have - not buying new ones - i am also turning the water off when i brush my teeth...which i hate to do for some reason!
ReplyDeletethat is a pretty sweet bag. i bike to work, use reusable bottles for drinks, cloth towels in the kitchen, drag recycling home from work (no recycling here :() etc. i do love straws though; i should get some of those glass ones....
ReplyDeleteTo be eco friendly I turn off the lights whenever I leave the room, ride my bike when I can, eat a minimal amount of meat, bring my reusable water bottle with me when I travel so I don't have to buy bottled! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteTo be ecofriendly I make my own fertilizer and grow my own veggies in the summer!
ReplyDeleteTo be eco friendly, I make handmade all natural cleaners and laundry detergent. My family has one large car and one scooter instead of two cars. And I cloth diaper both of my children.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is that I try to buy most of my clothing used. Thrift shopping is so fun, especially because I'm a seamstress and can alter or change the clothing to my liking.
I took the quiz and realized how much more I can do to conserve. Especially with water and the house. We'd need 4 earths for me. Geesh!

ReplyDeleteI'm reusing bags, turning off lights when I leave a room, carpooling, recycling, and using my reusable water bottle.
I use a refillable, washable, water bottle. I'm also a stickler for turning of lights when I leave a room, and recycling whatever possible.
