The Getty

Yesterday my mom, my brother and I went the The Getty museum in LA. I've never been to an art museum (or any well-known museum, really) but I've always wanted to go. This was my first step in becoming a student of the world (my full admissions being in August after I graduate college). I think it was a good first experience (other than almost freaking out in the underground parking structure because I am not a coal miner and it's not natural for a living, breathing person to be underneath the earth's surface. And because it had a tram.)

I will be the first person to admit that I know nothing about art, at least not technically. I've never studied art but can appreciate the beauty of it and the sheer talent it requires. But even as an art novice I couldn't help but be amazed as I stood in front of the paintings of Van Gogh and Renoir and Rembrandt and saw up close the intricacies of the strokes and colors and textures. So much so that one of the guards told me to back up, haha.

Here is the rest of my experience at The Getty.

Van Gogh, Irises
Van Gogh's Irises. He painted it while in an asylum for mental illness. Amazing what kind of beauty can be created despite (or even because of) someone's circumstances.

The panoramic view of LA was breathtaking (and not just because of the smog.)

Rembrandt and Degas.

My first museum experience was quite enjoyable. I even came home and watched this documentary that proves that really anyone can love and collect art. So now I'm looking for more museums to visit. If you have any recommendations within the southern California area, I would love to hear it!

  1. The Huntington Library in San Marino (right next to Pasadena). Its an art gallery and botanical gardens. I had to go there for an art class once and have been wanting to go back since. Lovely, lovely place. It's smaller than The Getty, but it's pretty and has a wonderful collection of art. It's also not as busy from what I remember, and you won't have to deal with a tram! Check it out and enjoy! :)

  2. Also! The San Diego Museum of Art is amazing, and where it's located (in Balboa Park) there's a ton of museums and things to see. It really makes for a nice day!
