Music Style: Debbie Harry

debbieharry

One of my original personal style icons has always been Debbie Harry. She's the epitome of eclectic-badass-rocker-girl, with her signature platinum blonde hair and oozing sex appeal. She was definitely a woman in a man's world, fronting the punk/new wave band Blondie at venues like CBGBs, all while keeping her femininity and unique style. I had the pleasure of seeing Blondie for my 17th birthday, and it was amazing! Debbie Harry was as beautiful and cool and sexy and stylish as ever! It was definitely one of my favorite birthdays. I still look at her for inspiration when I want my style to be a little more "edgy" and "rocker", and I couldn't think of a better icon to take after than her!

Styled: Jean Paul Gaultier for Target Dress

jean paul dress

I got a email asking how I would style this Jean Paul Gaultier for Target dress for a birthday party. To me, this dress gives off two different vibes; One is a Grecian vibe, and the other is a rocker chick vibe, which is great because there's always two different ways to celebrate a birthday, right? A casual outing, or a big extravaganza.
If I was just going to to lunch and a day of shopping for my birthday I would go for the more simplistic Grecian look: lace up sandals, big floppy hat and gold bangles. Casual chic fit for a Greek goddess.
If I was going to throw a rockin' party, or even go out for an extravagant evening I would play up the rocker-feel of the dress with a studded belt, sky-high red pumps and some firey red nail polish.

How would you style it?

Red Stripes Remixed

I've used StyleCaster before to find inspiration for my how to wear white jeans dilemma, and this time I'm using it to find different ways on how to wear candy stripes, or in this case, a red and white striped shirt. This is the whole reason for starting my blog, and for documenting my outfits: to find inspiration and be able to make numerous looks from things I already have in my wardrobe.
I love how this one shirt can create 5 completely different looks. And not to mention it looks très French chic.

1. Nautical striped dress, Forever 21
2. Striped Ankle Strap Sandals, Yesstyle
3. Sailor's Round Hat, Ruche
4. Carousel Dress, Spotted Moth
5. Nautical Storytales Dress, Ruche
6. Red Newport Cordones, Toms Shoes
7. Embellished Striped Top, Topshop

If the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear 'red stripes' is Jamaican beer, then I think you might be on the wrong blog. Har har, just kidding. But really, who doesn't love red and white stripes? It's a refreshing alternative to the traditional black and white stripes, and well, they'll come in handy when you show your patriotism in a couple weeks.

Men's shirt to Girl's Dress

shirt to dress

I found this great tutorial from Made on how to make a man's shirt into a girl's dress. I scrounged through some goodwill bags and found one of my brother's old shirts and made this dress for my niece. I kind of just winged it since I couldn't get the pattern to enlarge on my computer, and I didn't know my niece's exact measurements. So when my sister sent me this picture of her wearing it I was so relieved that it fit! The best part was that the hem and buttons are already done from the shirt and I removed the pocket from the shirt and sewed it back on the dress, so you could whip this up in an afternoon. Total cost of dress: $0.00!

I hear the train a comin'

Last night I had a dream about riding on a train and I woke up remembering seeing this Ports 1961 ad campaign a couple days ago. I felt like it was a sign that I needed to post it. I'd like to believe that even though trains aren't a typical means of transportation like they once were, that wonderful things still happen on them, and on the platforms of the stations ala Brief Encounter. Of course my dream, nor real life for that matter, are as wonderful as Brief Encounter or these pictures, but it's nice to think that it was.
