A Necklace of Flowers

This outfit was inspired by this picture:

It's been in my 'inspiration' folder for quite some time because I'm in love with that necklace... so when I saw this yellow flower necklace from Ruche I knew it was meant to be. It's a little more simple than the one in the picture, but just as cute (or so I think).

Lazy Saturday

Lazy Day

Lazy Day

It's a very rare occurrence for me to have a saturday off, and an even more rare occurrence to have everyone else in my family be working on a saturday, so I decided today would be a lazy day. Kind of. I actually got quite a lot done: I ran, cleaned my make up brushes, read, started crocheting a new plastic bag, put windshield wiper fluid in my car, and did some laundry. Not hard tasks, but things I've been putting off. But it was nice to not put on any makeup, let my hair dry naturally and just enjoy my day off. This is where I spent most of my day:

relaxing, crocheting, reading and listening to old jazz music. I need more of these days.

Batik Dresses

I was doing my daily clicks at The Hunger Site when I saw these dresses being advertised on the sidebar-- seriously, how cute are they? Both are handmade and fairly traded from Ghana, both fund 150 cups of food and both are under $50. Could they be more perfect? The hard part is actually deciding which one to get...

And The Winner Is...

The winner of the reusable bag giveaway is Tara!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the contest, re-posted it in their blogs and tweeted about it! I wish I could give you all a bag, but my hands can't work that fast, haha... but keep an eye out, there may be another giveaway in the works ;)

As a lot of you did, I took the carbon footprint quiz as well-- my results are pretty bad... my total was 179.85, and while it's under the country's average... we'd still need 4.64 earths if everyone lived like me! Yikes! This is why I wanted to know what all of YOU were doing to become more eco-friendly. so I (and others) could get some ideas of how to change to a more sustainable lifestyle. I'm pretty green (pun intended) to the whole "green movement"-- and I've taken small steps like: using reusable bags, turning off lights, unplugging appliances, using a reusable water bottle, recycling as much as possible, turning off the water when brushing my teeth, using environmentally friendly laundry detergents, shampoos, and soaps, and buying second-hand as much as possible-- but you guys do A LOT more: riding your bike to work and to do errands (so jealous! everything here is so spread out!), growing your own vegetables, air drying clothes, composting, taking shorter showers, reducing your meat consumption, and buying local and organic food. You guys really do inspire me to do better and become more aware of what I do. So thank you! and keep the ideas coming-- I love hearing them!

and that isn't all-- because of all your 39 lovely entries-- I have decided to donate $50 to the World Wildlife Fund.

Reusable Bag Giveaway!

giveaway
I'm SO excited to offer my first ever giveaway! As mentioned before I've been making reusable bags from plastic bags, and I made one from the leftover bags I had around the house and thought what better than to give it away to one of you lovely people? You can take it with you on all your shopping extravaganzas, especially to the thrift stores because buying second-hand and vintage IS recycling don't forget! But that's not all! In addition to the bag I'm also including some of my favorite "eco-friendly" items:

- A reusable water bottle
- A toothbrush from Preserve made from recycled yogurt cups!
- A jar of Burt's Bees citrus facial scrub

Interested? You can enter by doing one (or all) of the following:

- Comment and tell me what you are doing to become more "eco-friendly"
- Take the Ecological Footprint Quiz and comment with your results
- Repost this giveaway on your blog or twitter and comment me the link

That's it! For each one you do, leave me a comment and you'll be entered up to 3 times (each entry must be made in an individual comment). Make sure to include your name and email if you don't have it listed on your blog (or don't have a blog) so I can contact you.

You have until SUNDAY JUNE 21st AT MIDNIGHT to enter!

AND that's not all! For every entry I receive I will donate $1 to the World Wildlife Fund. So no reason not to enter, right?

New Vest and Bag

New Vest!

New Vest!

(shirt [actually a dress]: American Apparel, Jeans: Target, Vest: Ruche, Shoes: Steve Madden)

After looking around the Ruche website the other day, I spotted this vest and decided I had to have it. I don't have many vests (read: one) and I'm not sure why. Maybe because for awhile I saw e v e r y b o d y wearing them and I was kind of 'eh' about it. But seeing this vest, I could come up with at least 5 different outfits I could wear it with. I love the creamy natural color, it makes it look not so heavy, and more summery. I'm definitely happy with my purchase!

Also! I finished up some projects I was working on, finally! I've been crocheting together reusable bags made from "plarn" which is plastic bags that are cut up and made into a yarn. So instead of throwing the bags away (we've all heard of the plastic bags floating around the Pacific Ocean the size of the United States) you can make them into a bag you can use over and over! I first saw one of these when a girl came into my work with one and told me her bag was made from Target bags. I was in complete awe, and needed to have one. So I looked up the pattern online and made one from all Albertson's bags and one from all Target bags.

They're actually quite sturdy, and fit a lot. You can find the pattern for this as well as the directions on how to make plarn at Myrecycledbags.com Hopefully now these will cut down my plastic bag consumption low enough that I won't have to make more. Little steps, right?

My Current "Swoon Worthy" Item

ruffletopdress

The ruffle top dress! What says summer better than a ruffled dress blowing in the wind while you frolick around the beach or at a pinic in the park? By the way, do you love my generic attempt at making a "fancy" picture? haha! I'll get better, I promise.

Redondo Maxi Dress: Lulu's
Au Pair Maxi Dress: ModCloth
Eyelet Trim Sundress: Old Navy
Ziz Zag Strapless Dress: shopbop

Other things I'm currently swooning over:

This wedding concept. I don't plan on getting married anytime soon, but if I were... this is exactly the wedding I'd want.

The 'I collect light' flickr group. so many great pictures.

This photo from The Satorialist. Or any of his pictures from Governor's Island for that matter.

Awkward Family Photos. Not necessarily "swooning" but rather greatly enjoying myself while looking at all the awkwardness.

Enjoy!

Then challenge 6 blog friends to do the same!

My 6th folder, 6th picture is:

Oh my. This is me and my sister (eating licorice, not surprisingly) in my room. This picture was taken about 5 years ago, so that means I was 17 and my sister was 23. We had just moved into this house, so that's why the walls are so bare. I would like to think that's why it's such a mess, but it's always quite messy I'm sorry to say, haha. I was ridiculously blonde and tan, and had a very different style. I was into wearing bright colors, creepers and my belt to the side, as shown above, haha. Looking back at pictures of me in highschool, I don't remember showing off my midriff so much, but apparently I did. I looked older back then than I do now. There isn't really much of a story behind the picture, we were just messing around in my room... but it's nice, hard evidence at just how much I've changed in the past 5 years, oy vey!

Café Des Ambasade

quaintrelle
"I never take any notice to what common people say,
and I never interfere with what charming people do."
-- Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Oh what I wouldn't give to live in 19th century Paris. To me, this lady epitomizes a quaintrelle, and look at the people at the café-- the man with the beret and ascot, everyone dressed to the nines. Sometimes I wish we still dressed up like this. Be extravagant for no reason. Dare to wear heels on cobblestone, and sit at a outside table with a pointy mustache and top hat. J'adore!

One Bodysuit, Three Ways

Bodysuit Look 1
(UO bodysuit, Target jeans, F21 sandals)

Bodysuit look 2
(UO bodysuit, Marc Jacobs Skirt, Target wedges)

Bodysuit Look 3

uo23
(UO bodysuit, Forever 21 shorts and belt, Ross Sweater, Alloy Heels)

Here is the last installment of the wear-one-Urban-Outfitters-piece-three-ways from Weardrobe. This last piece, the bodysuit, I must admit was out of my comfort zone. It was quite intimidating since I haven't worn a bodysuit since I was six... but after awhile it started growing on me and I ended up loving it. But unfortunately I had to bid it a farewell and send it back. A big thanks to Weardrobe for letting me style up these pieces!
